Where We Come From

For well over 100 years, animals carrying the B I Bar brand have represented the Ritschard Family’s personal commitment to raising quality, healthy livestock. While we no longer physically brand our livestock, the values we learned from this heritage are still applied to the breeding of outstanding Suri Alpacas at the B I Bar Ranch. A family operation, we are focused on continuing a legacy of excellence in our animals and enduring relationships with our clients. Now a ranch of around 25 alpacas, we specialize in grey and other colored Suri alpacas while still adhering to the simple principle set down over our family’s many generations: outstanding animals – responsibly produced.

A different approach to breeding

At B I Bar Ranch, we believe in sustainable breeding practices that emphasize confirmation as well as outstanding fleece quality. By considering body structure in our breeding decisions, we insure our animals can produce happy, healthy offspring just as nature intended. To us, a robust physical confirmation provides the best foundation for producing exceptional fleece for many generations to come.

Building relationships, not just making sales

Alpaca ranching is, and always will be, better as a cooperative effort. We understand that the relationships we forge are far more beneficial than any individual sale. We want to help you succeed, because we understand good relationships work both ways.

Suri Alpaca Yarn

Suri fiber has no crimp, unlike Huacaya alpaca fiber (most often just referred to as "alpaca") and thus, no loft or bulk. The fiber characteristics create a very finely spun yarn that works well for hand knitting weights from lace to chunky.

Suri fiber is known for its drape and luster and when used in the proper applications, is breathtaking to behold. This fiber comes in a wide range of natural colors including white, fawn, brown, black and grey, but when dyed, the intensity of color is magnificent.

Eco-friendly and Sustainable

Alpacas are efficient grazers that have a minimal environmental impact. Alpacas create a sustainable product that requires no chemicals or dyes.

Hypoallergenic

Alpaca fiber doesn't have lanolin, so alpaca clothing is itch-free and safe for all skin types. If you've ever struggled with sheep's wool products, you will love alpaca.

Extremely Warm

Alpaca fiber is three times warmer than sheep's wool and it naturally wicks away moisture. This amazing material will keep you warm and dry in all seasons.

Luxurious

Softer than cashmere, yet still water repellent, odor-resistant, and super strong. Alpaca is called "the fiber of the gods" because it offers luxury mixed with functionality.

We are passionate about our fiber and we encourage you to join us in our enthusiasm!
